Extension of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy Program

Have you benefited from the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) program? If you have not, you still can.

The CEWS aims to protect jobs, encourage employers to quickly rehire workers, who were previously laid off because of the COVID-19 pandemic and help the Canadian economy recovers from this crisis. Since its implementation in March 2020, it has helped more than 3.7 million of Canadians.

The wage subsidy is a base subsidy for all employers whose revenues have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as a top-up subsidy for employers that have been greatly impacted. There is a separate rate structure for workers who were laid off.

The program has been extended a few times since March 2020, and the government plans to further extend it until June 2021 with enhancements to better respond to the evolving economic and health situation. The proposed enhancements will make the program more flexible and generous while ensure it provides continued support to employers. Note that these changes complement the new Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy.
